Direct air capacity between China and the United States remains well below pre-pandemic levels and is hampered by routing disputes over Russian airspace. Xi’s public appeal, delivered alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, gives both regulators and airlines political cover to negotiate additional frequencies and potentially resume suspended city pairs such as Boston–Beijing or Seattle–Shanghai. For multinational firms, more seats and routes would cut transit times and lower ticket prices that have remained stubbornly high. Education providers and corporate universities stand to gain from a surge of U.S. students and interns if visa issuance keeps pace. The pledge follows months of incremental confidence-building steps, including streamlined visa-renewal interviews at U.S. consulates in China and Beijing’s extension of its unilateral 30-day visa-free policy to Canadian and British nationals earlier this year. Analysts note that a tangible increase in flight frequencies could materialise as early as the northern-winter IATA scheduling season, assuming bilateral talks progress quickly. Corporate travel managers should monitor Department of Transportation filings and Chinese CAAC announcements for new slots, and consider locking in flexible fare classes to capture future price drops.
