Opposition pitches biggest immigration cut in Australia’s history
Australia’s migration debate intensified over the weekend after Opposition Leader Angus Taylor told the ABC’s Insiders program that a future Coalition government would slash net-overseas-migration (NOM) to 100 000 a year—roughly one-third of today’s intake—and redirect the program toward “higher-skilled, higher-earning” arrivals. Taylor framed the policy as an economic reform rather than a culture-wars wedge, arguing that a smaller but more productive intake would relieve housing pressure, curb inflation and lift wages without hurting the budget. Business groups warn, however, that deep cuts could worsen skills shortages in construction, health and aged care—the very sectors relied upon to tackle Australia’s cost-of-living crisis. The Coalition plan also halves the humanitarian quota to 10 000 places and tightens visa screening, but rejects One Nation–style bans that target specific nationalities. Instead, Taylor said entry decisions should rest on a person’s “character and conduct”, not their passport. For global mobility managers the message is clear: employers that depend on temporary visas—particularly student–to-graduate and bridging-visa pathways—face a dramatically smaller talent pool if the Coalition prevails at the next federal election due by 2028. Organisations should revisit workforce plans, sponsorship pipelines and housing allowances now, and model worst-case labour-supply scenarios. The proposal also signals bipartisan momentum for lower headline numbers, reinforcing the importance of early talent identification and faster mobilisation strategies.
