Three Ongoing Airport Strikes Disrupt Ground Handling and ATC Services Across Spain
Strike-Tracker data show that on 12 October Spain faces three simultaneous airport-related labour actions: an indefinite Groundforce baggage-handling strike at Barcelona-El Prat (major); a maintenance-tech walkout affecting Madrid-Barajas’ automated baggage system; and an air-traffic-controller stoppage at Saerco-managed towers in Jerez and A Coruña. Although all three strikes began weeks or months ago, today’s overlap coincides with the National Day long weekend, generating longer queues and sporadic flight delays. Airlines have issued rebooking waivers, and AENA has activated contingency staffing but warns that minimum-service decrees limit its flexibility. Business travellers should build at least 90 minutes of additional buffer time for departures from the affected airports. Companies can mitigate disruption by selecting carriers that self-handle baggage in Barcelona or by routing flights through Valencia or Málaga, which remain strike-free. The strikes underscore persistent labour tensions in Spain’s liberalised ground-handling sector. Negotiations between Groundforce and the CGT union stalled over pay adjustments linked to inflation now running at 5.2 %. A separate mediation round is scheduled for 15 October; failure could see the union escalate to a nationwide call involving Madrid and Palma de Mallorca. For mobility budgets, sustained strikes may inflate taxi and hotel costs as travellers experience layovers. HR teams should remind employees to retain receipts for EU Regulation 261 claims where delays exceed three hours.
