Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport and border-inspection authorities are bracing for their busiest fortnight in three years as the 140th Canton Fair opens on 15 October. The China Ports Association and Guangzhou Daily report that daily inbound and outbound passenger flows at the airport are forecast to average 58,000—up 13.6 percent year-on-year—with peaks above 64,000. To keep queues manageable, Baiyun has rolled out a suite of traveller-friendly measures. Twenty self-service credential kiosks in Terminals 2 and 3 allow exhibitors to collect fair passes, print boarding tags and process exit-entry cards in under two minutes. Dedicated “Canton Fair” lanes at immigration, security and customs give priority clearance to holders of exhibitor or buyer badges, while baggage tagged with the fair’s orange logo receives expedited handling. Foreign attendees have additional perks. The airport is promoting China’s 240-hour transit-without-visa (TWOV) policy, under which nationals of 54 countries can enter Guangdong visa-free for up to six days if onward tickets are confirmed. Officials remind guests to complete the electronic arrival card before wheels-down to cut inspection time by as much as 70 percent. Airlines including China Southern and Air China are offering combined ticket-and-hotel packages that bundle fast-track immigration access. The infrastructure boost extends beyond the airport. Metro Lines 3 and 8 will run special schedules to the Pazhou exhibition complex, and a dedicated airport express bus starts every 15 minutes. With 32,000 exhibitors and tens of thousands of foreign buyers expected, local authorities hope the seamless arrival experience will reinforce Guangzhou’s pitch as a global business hub. Corporate mobility managers should alert travelling staff to carry official invitation letters and fair badges at all times; these documents are required to use the priority lanes. Those transiting under the 240-hour visa waiver must also keep printed or electronic proof of onward travel. Hotels around Pazhou are near capacity, so late-booking delegates may need to consider downtown properties linked by the expanded metro timetable.
