UAE carriers cancel Riyadh and Jeddah services as Saudi airport closure extends to 17 October

UAE residents planning business trips or Umrah pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia are facing a fresh wave of flight cancellations after missile strikes forced the closure of Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport until at least 21:00 GMT on 17 October. Gulf News reports that Emirates, Etihad, flydubai and Air Arabia scrubbed multiple rotations on 14-15 October, with Etihad extending Riyadh and Dammam cancellations through 19 October. The schedule upheaval comes amid wider security concerns linked to the US-Israel-Iran conflict and Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure. Industry analysts note that disruption is spilling over to other Gulf routes, with some foreign carriers suspending Abu Dhabi services until late October. Travellers have been urged to refresh online check-in, arrive earlier at DXB and AUH and maintain flexible itineraries. Corporate mobility teams should review duty-of-care protocols, ensure employees have live flight-tracking apps and confirm hotel availability in case of overnight delays. Companies with frequent KSA travel may need to activate contingency plans such as rerouting via Bahrain or Kuwait or switching meetings to virtual platforms. Travel-insurance providers have reminded policyholders that cancellations related to officially declared conflicts may fall under force-majeure clauses; organisations should therefore verify coverage for staff and assignees. Human-resources departments should also monitor potential knock-on effects on residence-visa validity if employees are stranded outside the UAE beyond permitted absence periods.
