Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) confirmed on 15 October that its ‘City Terminal’ pilot has successfully processed travellers through security screening and immigration away from the airport, trimming total airport dwell-time from two hours to just 45 minutes. The concept—announced at this week’s Airport Show—allows passengers to check in and hand over baggage at a downtown facility, complete passport control with General Directorate of Residency & Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) officers on site, and travel to Dubai International Airport in a sealed, secure vehicle. During the closed-door trial, participants scanned biometric passports and faces at mobile counters identical to those at DXB. Once cleared, they were issued a ‘green lane’ boarding pass that lets them bypass the regular immigration halls and proceed straight to the departure concourse. DAEP says the technology is airline-agnostic and can integrate with Emirates’ and flydubai’s existing off-airport baggage-drop services. Project leads argue the model could relieve kerb-side congestion at the world’s busiest international airport and serve as a test-bed for planned moves to the enlarged facilities at Al Maktoum International in the early 2030s. If rolled out commercially, hotels and free-zone business parks could host permanent ‘mini-terminals’, replicating the downtown check-in infrastructure Hong Kong and Seoul pioneered two decades ago. For global-mobility teams the service promises shorter land-side queues, predictable connection times for regional meetings and an additional layer of document verification before employees hit the main airport. However, security chiefs will watch how data captured outside the federal border is stored and shared, especially as the UAE tightens rules on biometric and facial-recognition use in the private sector. DAEP says further stakeholder consultations—covering airline cost-sharing, Ministry of Interior approvals and GCAA regulatory oversight—will run through Q1 2027 before a decision on permanent facilities is taken.
