Ontario Adds 3,600 Seats at Queen’s University in $1.7 Billion Capacity Push
Ontario’s government has allocated funding for 3,600 new student seats at Queen’s University as part of a province-wide initiative to create more than 70,000 additional post-secondary spaces by 2030. The 15 October announcement targets programs in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, health care, education and the skilled trades—fields the province identifies as critical to its future workforce. Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security Nolan Quinn said employer demand and more than 1,000 industry support letters shaped the funding decision. The seat expansion will roll out in two phases; the first tranche of 30,000 seats was allocated in May, with institutions—Queen’s among them—competing for the remaining 40,000 through a proposal process weighted toward regional labour needs. For global-mobility managers the message is clear: Ontario is positioning its higher-education sector to admit more international and domestic students in shortage occupations. More seats mean a greater likelihood of admission offers for foreign applicants, followed by eligibility for post-graduation work permits and eventually economic immigration pathways. Queen’s says it will prioritise co-op and work-integrated-learning options to embed students in local employers. Universities Canada notes that study-permit approvals have tightened in 2026, making institutional capacity an increasingly important selection factor at IRCC. Additional seats in STEM and health programs could therefore tilt acceptance odds in applicants’ favour. Employers in Kingston and the surrounding region are already collaborating on curriculum design to ensure graduates meet regulatory licensing requirements. The broader $6.4 billion post-secondary funding framework, unveiled in the 2026 budget, earmarks $1.2 billion for campus infrastructure, suggesting further capacity announcements are imminent at other universities. Immigration practitioners advise prospective students to monitor individual program quotas, as popular engineering disciplines can still fill quickly despite system-wide growth.
