Portuguese Consulate to run one-day passport and citizenship clinic in Feira de Santana
The Consulate-General of Portugal in Salvador announced on 19 October 2026 that it will take its mobile “Presença Consular” service to Feira de Santana on 25 November. For a single day, a team of consular officers will set up shop at the NH Hotel to issue Portuguese passports, national ID “Cartão de Cidadão”, birth registrations for nationality purposes and marriage transcriptions. Appointments must be requested by e-mail no later than 20 November. Bahia’s interior hosts one of Brazil’s largest Portuguese-descendant communities as well as a growing cohort of Brazilian professionals seeking dual EU citizenship for mobility within the Schengen Area. In normal times residents must travel 100 kilometres to Salvador for document services—a trip that can add hotel nights and lost workdays. By moving the counter-staff to Feira, the consulate aims to clear a backlog of over 1,200 pending passport renewals before the Christmas travel rush. For multinational employers the clinic is more than a convenience: staff holding Portuguese (and therefore EU) passports can take up assignments in Europe without work-permit bureaucracy under EU free-movement rules. HR departments with time-sensitive projects in Lisbon or Porto are urging eligible employees in Bahia to secure their Portuguese documents during the pop-up. The consulate will deploy on-site biometric stations able to print passports within seven working days—faster than the standard eight-week turnaround when applications are routed through Lisbon. Officials will also brief attendees on Portugal’s recently amended Nationality Act, which, as of April 2026, allows grandchildren of Portuguese citizens to apply directly without demonstrating Portuguese-language proficiency. Applicants must e-mail “consulado.bahia@mne.pt” with the subject line “PRESENÇA CONSULAR EM FEIRA DE SANTANA + [desired service]”. Required documentation is listed in the public notice and includes proof of residence in Bahia for at least six months, original Brazilian civil certificates and, where relevant, parents’ or grandparents’ Portuguese birth records.
