Chung Yeung surge sends Hong Kong’s daily border traffic to 1.32 million
Hong Kong’s border control network experienced its heaviest single-day load since the full post-pandemic reopening on Sunday, 18 October, when a combined 1.32 million inbound and outbound passenger movements were processed at the SAR’s 15 land, sea and air checkpoints. Immigration Department data released on Monday show 692,000 departures and 629,000 arrivals, with Hong Kong residents accounting for more than 530,000 outbound trips. The spike coincided with the three-day Chung Yeung Festival long-weekend, a traditional grave-sweeping holiday that increasingly doubles as an opportunity for leisure travel to neighbouring Guangdong or beyond. Lo Wu remained the busiest checkpoint, handling nearly 260,000 crossings, followed by the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (200,000) and the newly-rebuilt Huanggang Port (152,000). Airport volumes also climbed, with flight-tracker data showing more than 500 scheduled commercial departures on the day. Cross-boundary coach and railway operators deployed extra capacity and extended late-night services, while the Security Bureau’s “Easy Boundary” mobile portal issued real-time status advisories every 15 minutes. Despite the crush, authorities said average waiting times outside Huanggang remained below 45 minutes after crowd-management measures such as tidal-flow queuing and mobile passport booths were activated. For employers running Monday start-of-week shifts, the figures are a reminder to anticipate staffing gaps when major mainland and Hong Kong holidays overlap. Corporate mobility managers are being advised to encourage travellers to pre-enrol for e-Channel clearance and to build slack into travel timetables, especially for day-return business trips to Shenzhen and the western Pearl River Delta. The Immigration Department’s open-data dashboard, which now publishes daily checkpoint volumes at 10 a.m., can be integrated into HR travel-approval workflows to flag peak-risk periods. Looking ahead, Transport Commissioner Winnie Tse said agencies will conduct a joint after-action review to fine-tune crowd-forecast models before the next travel peak at Christmas. With Greater Bay Area integration accelerating, officials expect land-crossing flows to exceed 1.5 million per day within the next two years, making predictive analytics and traveller self-service enrolment central pillars of Hong Kong’s mobility strategy.
