Huanggang Port sets new record with 152,000 crossings and two-hour queues
Hong Kong’s first purpose-built 24-hour land port of entry, Huanggang, faced its toughest stress test yet on Sunday as festival travellers pushed throughput to 152,000—its highest since the facility reopened on 12 October. Immigration counters were fully staffed from 9 a.m. and a tidal-flow system was triggered when outbound volumes topped 30,000 within four hours, prompting the Security Bureau to switch the checkpoint’s status to “Busy” on the Easy Boundary platform at 1:45 p.m. Travellers reported queue times of up to two hours at the peak, though the advisory was lifted after throughput stabilised mid-afternoon. The revamped port features facial-recognition e-gates and joint-inspection halls designed to cut average clearance to under five minutes, but officials acknowledge “human behaviour factors”—including large family groups unfamiliar with self-service kiosks—can slow real-world processing. Transport operators responded by adding 120 extra franchised buses and 130 cross-boundary coach trips, with headways shortened to as little as two minutes. The MTR Corporation said East Rail Line services maintained four-minute frequencies, but reminded passengers that the line’s terminus connects only to Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, not Huanggang. For mobility planners, the episode underscores the need to educate assignees and visitors on checkpoint choice and digital-pre-clearance options. Companies relocating staff between Hong Kong and Shenzhen’s tech clusters may wish to stagger shift start times or provide corporate shuttle services that can divert to less-congested control points. The Immigration Department is evaluating whether to expand its “Go Hong Kong” mobile-e-Channel enrolment app—launched last month for frequent flyers—to regular cross-boundary bus passengers ahead of the Lunar New Year surge. Longer term, officials are looking at demand-based lane reconfiguration that would allow them to switch counters between arrival and departure functions in real time. A public consultation on extending automated vehicle clearance lanes to corporate shuttle vans is expected in early 2027.
