Qatar Airways will become the seventh international carrier to serve Australia’s new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) when it opens in December 2027, the airline confirmed on 21 October. The Doha-based carrier will start with three weekly Boeing 777-300ER flights from 15 December 2027, aiming to scale to daily operations within a year. The late-night arrival slot leverages WSI’s 24-hour curfew-free status, a key selling point for freight forwarders and corporate travellers in Sydney’s booming western corridor. Industry consultancy CAPA estimates the service could add A$530 million in visitor spending to New South Wales over five years and provide exporters with a direct cargo link to the Gulf markets. For mobility managers the route opens one-stop connectivity from Western Sydney to more than 170 global destinations via Doha, including high-growth African and European hubs. The announcement also strengthens Qatar Airways’ partnership with Virgin Australia, which is expected to offer domestic feed into WSI from day one, giving assignees a seamless through-ticket option. Travel buyers should note that tickets go on sale from 19 December 2026; early-bird corporate deals are likely as WSI and the NSW Government’s A$16 million ‘Take-Off Fund’ incentivise airlines to commit capacity. Competition from Emirates and Etihad is anticipated, which could translate into sharper premium-cabin pricing on Middle-East routings originating on the city’s western fringe.
