Virgin Australia seeks 28 extra weekly Bali flights, challenging Qantas for Indonesia capacity
Virgin Australia has lodged an application with the International Air Services Commission (IASC) for an additional 5,086 seats per week on routes to Denpasar, signalling a major expansion of its Indonesia network. The carrier proposes 28 new weekly services—17 from Perth, four each from Sydney and Melbourne, and three from Brisbane—using 182-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The move pits Virgin directly against Qantas Group, which filed earlier this month for 4,539 extra weekly seats under the Australia–Indonesia bilateral. With Virgin’s application covering a full five-year term, the IASC now faces the tricky task of allocating limited capacity between two feisty domestic rivals, while also balancing newcomer TransNusa’s recent entry on the Melbourne–Bali route. For corporate travel buyers the stakes are high: more competition could drive down already-soft leisure-led fares and free up premium-cabin seats during peak conference seasons. Perth businesses in particular stand to gain from Virgin’s plan to add a city pair that is currently served by five foreign or low-cost airlines but not by a full-service Australian carrier. Travel-management companies are recommending that clients holding group series to Indonesia build flexibility into contracts, as schedules may shift depending on the IASC determination expected by year-end. If approved, Virgin says flights could launch progressively from March 2027, aligning with its post-IPO fleet growth strategy. The tussle also underscores the value of bilateral air-service rights as a strategic asset. Mobility teams moving staff between Australia and Indonesia should monitor not only airline schedules but also regulatory filings, which increasingly dictate who can fly, how often and at what price.
