Italy temporarily re-introduces border controls with Spain amid migration security concerns
Italy has notified the European Commission that it will temporarily reinstate checks at all air and sea borders with Spain from 16 to 23 October 2026. According to the Commission’s Schengen “Temporary Reintroduction of Border Control” dashboard, Rome justified the measure by citing “continued threats to public policy, internal security, and the management of migration flows, with a risk of secondary movements within the Schengen area.” The controls apply to flights and ferries operating between the two countries. Although the Schengen Borders Code allows member states to re-impose internal border controls only as a last resort, Italy has resorted to the tool several times since 2024—most recently on its land frontier with Slovenia. The latest step comes as Spanish authorities themselves extended controls on the Italian frontier until 22 October, underscoring a wider regional effort to slow irregular movements across the Western Mediterranean and central EU corridors. For travellers the immediate impact will be longer queues and the need to carry valid travel documents even on intra-Schengen routes that are normally free of formalities. Airlines have begun to advise passengers flying between Italy and Spain to arrive earlier for departure, and ferry operators serving Civitavecchia–Barcelona and Genoa–Valencia routes have added identification checks at boarding. Corporate mobility managers should brief employees on the possibility of spot passport inspections, ensure that posted-worker notifications contain up-to-date itinerary information, and verify that posted staff who normally rely on national ID cards also carry passports to avoid delays. Companies moving high-value goods via just-in-time supply chains may wish to build in extra transit time or explore alternative routings through France until the controls are lifted. While the current measure is scheduled to end on 23 October, Italian officials hinted that a renewal remains possible if migration pressure stays high. Any extension would require a fresh notification and risk assessment under Articles 25 and 27 of the Borders Code, which Brussels must publish immediately. Mobility stakeholders should therefore monitor EU updates closely; the next Commission dashboard revision is expected on 24 October.
