UK urges OSCE states to tighten digital and financial net on human traffickers
Speaking at an OSCE special session on 22 October, UK Deputy Ambassador **James Ford** called for a “victim-centred, intelligence-led” crackdown on trafficking gangs who increasingly blend cyber-fraud, cryptocurrency and traditional smuggling routes. Ford warned that human trafficking now converges with online sexual exploitation and cross-border money-laundering, creating new compliance headaches for banks, fintechs and employers that move staff across Europe. The UK is pressing for wider adoption of **digital-forensics training** and shared financial-investigation teams within the OSCE’s 57 member states. It also wants a dedicated fund to help frontline border agencies upgrade to real-time passenger-data analytics and facial-recognition systems. For British companies operating in Central and Eastern Europe, the proposal could bring stricter KYC checks on recruitment agents and duty-of-care obligations when moving third-country nationals. Ford’s intervention comes as the UK Home Office prepares the *Modern Slavery (Prevention of Exploitation) Regulations 2027*, which will expand reporting duties for sponsors of temporary workers. If adopted, large sponsors may have to file annual ‘exploitation-risk assessments’ detailing how they monitor supply-chain partners—a potential new administrative burden for global mobility teams. Practically, firms should audit labour-supply chains in higher-risk sectors such as care, agriculture and construction, ensure contractors use certified electronic right-to-work systems, and budget for enhanced background checks where staff transit multiple OSCE jurisdictions. Cyber-security teams should also note the link between online fraud rings and trafficking; compromised HR platforms have already been used to harvest migrant data for extortion.
