Austria’s traffic broadcasters Ö3, motorway agency ASFINAG and motoring club ÖAMTC are urging drivers to brace for one of the busiest weekends of the year as schools break up and the 26 October National Day approaches. Forecasts released on 23 October predict long jams on east-west corridors out of Vienna and Linz on Friday afternoon and on alpine routes toward Tyrol, Salzburg and South Tyrol throughout the weekend. Bottlenecks include the Brenner (A13), Fernpass (B179) and Tauern (A10) corridors, with additional delays expected at major border crossings such as Nickelsdorf (A4, Hungary) and Walserberg (A1, Germany) where temporary Schengen checks remain in force. Within Vienna, the Ringstrasse will close from early Sunday for National Day rehearsals, affecting tram services until Monday evening. ASFINAG has scheduled overnight tunnel maintenance on the A9 and S6 while an emergency drill will close a section of the A7 in Linz on Saturday night. Drivers are advised to consult live apps and consider rail alternatives; the situational winter-tyre rule re-enters force on 1 November, adding another compliance requirement. Business travellers should allow extra time for airport transfers – especially to Vienna and Salzburg – as coach services may be caught in congestion. Logistics planners moving time-sensitive goods through the Brenner corridor should pad ETAs or re-route via Switzerland or the Tauern axis. The warning also highlights new free-flow toll sections in France and recent exemptions for electric vehicles in German low-emission zones, prompting companies operating mixed fleets to verify vignette obligations before crossing borders.
