Austria prolongs internal border controls with Hungary, Slovenia, Czechia and Slovakia until March 2027
Austria’s Ministry of the Interior has quietly rolled over the emergency border-control regime it first introduced in 2022, issuing a new six-month extension that will now keep spot checks in place on the land frontiers with Hungary, Slovenia, Czechia and Slovakia until at least 15 March 2027. Officials say the measure is a core pillar of the country’s evolving ‘flexible control belt’, which allows police to inspect travellers not only at fixed crossing points but anywhere within a wide border zone and – under the joint “Operation Fox” task-force with Hungary – even on Hungarian territory. The ministry argues that the system has been instrumental in driving irregular migration numbers to a four-year low. From January-September 2026 only 7,397 asylum applications were filed nationwide, 45 % fewer than in the same period of 2025, while the number of apprehensions in the eastern province of Burgenland has collapsed from almost 15,000 in October 2022 to just 16 so far this month. For legitimate travellers the renewed controls mean that passports or ID cards must still be carried on all cross-border road, rail and coach journeys, and motorists should plan for ad-hoc stops that can add 10-30 minutes to driving times at busy crossings such as Nickelsdorf (A4) or Spielfeld (A9). Companies moving goods through the region are advised to pad schedules and remind drivers of documentary requirements; carriers whose crews lack proof of right to enter risk on-the-spot fines and forced returns. The extension also signals to neighbouring states and Brussels that Vienna intends to keep unilateral safeguards in place until the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and the Pact on Migration are fully operational – a posture likely to rekindle the perennial debate in the Schengen Council over the proportionality of internal controls.
