Austria reports record low asylum applications and record removals in 2026
The Interior Ministry’s latest migration bulletin released on 23 October shows only 7,397 asylum applications were lodged between January and September 2026, a 45 % drop year-on-year and the lowest figure in three decades. In the same nine-month period, 11,975 people left Austria, half of them forcibly removed, resulting in what the ministry calls ‘minus-migration’. September saw just 308 first-time claims (-58 % YoY), with Syrians accounting for most cases, many being children born in Austria. Officials attribute the decline to extended family-reunification suspensions, rapid-procedure ‘fast-track’ adjudications for low-protection-rate countries and intensified joint patrols with Hungary under “Operation Fox”. The government’s decision earlier this month to prolong internal border checks for another six months is presented as part of the same toolbox. Critics, including NGOs and opposition parties, argue that aggressive removals risk violating EU fundamental-rights standards and could hamper employer efforts to recruit third-country labour. For companies managing international assignees, the figures signal an even tighter asylum-to-work pipeline: humanitarian residence permits will be rarer, and sponsorships under the Red-White-Red Card scheme may face additional scrutiny. HR teams should anticipate longer lead times for family reunification cases once the suspension quota system launches in 2027. The wider European context is similar: EU-wide asylum filings fell 24 % over the same period, but Austria still ranks 11th in absolute numbers. Brussels is expected to monitor the proportionality of Austria’s measures under the upcoming Asylum and Migration Pact review.
