Brussels Airport and freight specialist ConnexEurope have opened a 3,900 m² logistics building in the airport’s cargo zone, cementing Zaventem’s role as a multimodal gateway between Europe and Africa. The facility—3,400 m² of warehouse space plus 500 m² of offices—will serve as the company’s Belgian headquarters and consolidate teams previously spread across multiple sites. Built to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards, the hub features solar panels, LED smart lighting and pre-fitted electric-vehicle charging bays. Airport chief cargo officer Geert Aerts said the project “shows how we can grow cargo volumes while hitting ambitious sustainability targets.” For ConnexEurope (formerly Comexas) the move supports plans to expand perishables and project-cargo services for mining clients in the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond. Although focused on freight, the investment has clear implications for global mobility. Brussels Airport’s cargo area now hosts more than 200 logistics firms, creating new assignment opportunities in supply-chain management, customs compliance and cold-chain technology. In parallel, the airport’s real-estate arm is offering combo leases that bundle warehouse floor space with co-working offices—an attractive option for multinationals seeking flexible arrangements for mobile project teams. The facility opens just weeks before the EU’s Entry/Exit biometric border system becomes fully operational. Airport authorities say the extra warehouse capacity will help avoid airside congestion as forwarders adjust to the new passenger-data capture routines that may lengthen aircraft turnaround times this summer.
