Austria extends Czech border checks for another three months
Austria has decided to keep its temporary checks on the land borders with Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia until mid-September, prolonging a regime that has been renewed every quarter since 2015. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced the new three-month extension on Sunday morning, stressing that tighter controls remain necessary despite the European Union’s recent call for the removal of internal Schengen barriers. Karner said the police will switch from fixed booths to “wide-area, flexible and intelligence-led patrols” in order to catch smugglers without unduly delaying commuters and freight traffic. For Czech businesses the move means that trucks, buses and company cars heading to Austria must again factor random inspections into their journey times. Trade associations warn that even short delays can upset just-in-time supply chains linking industrial clusters around Brno and Linz.

If the tighter controls make you unsure about the exact documents you or your employees should carry, VisaHQ can help. Through its Czech Republic portal (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/), the agency provides step-by-step visa and residence-permit assistance, courier filing and real-time status tracking—services that can keep cross-border trips running smoothly even when every extra minute at the border matters.

Logistics company DB Schenker told Czech television that it has instructed drivers to add 45 minutes of buffer time on south-bound routes “until the situation normalises.” The extension also collides with the roll-out of the EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum, which formally entered into application on 12 June. Brussels argues that member states should now rely on risk-based spot checks and closer police cooperation rather than systematic border controls. Vienna counters that the volume of irregular crossings on the so-called Western Balkan route is still too high and that “external borders must first be watertight.” Czechia officially regrets the decision but says it understands Austrian security concerns. The Ministry of the Interior reiterated that Czech citizens and residents can still cross anywhere along the green border, yet it advises travellers to carry identity papers and allow extra time, especially during peak hours. Rail passengers on the popular Prague–Vienna line are unlikely to face checks on board, but random inspections at the first Austrian stop (Gmünd or Břeclav) remain possible. Practical tip for assignees: employers should update travel policies to reflect the possibility of on-the-spot ID verification. Non-EU assignees holding Czech residence permits should keep the plastic card (biometric residence permit) on them, not just a copy. HR teams may wish to log border crossings for posted workers to document working-time records, because delays caused by immigration checks could affect maximum driving hours for posted drivers.
