Belgium emerges as new launch point for Channel migrant crossings
For almost a decade the English Channel’s small-boat crisis has been concentrated on the 45-kilometre stretch between Calais and Dover. On 18 June, however, Belgian officials confirmed a worrisome shift: people-smuggling gangs are now launching dinghies directly from the Flemish coast. According to figures cited by the Belgian Coast Guard, more than 400 people have been intercepted off Belgian beaches so far in 2026 – compared with none in 2025. Frontex analysts attribute the displacement effect to tougher patrols on the French side. Smugglers have adapted by using so-called “taxi boats” – rubber craft that put to sea from quiet beaches such as De Panne, Koksijde and Nieuwpoort, hug the shoreline to pick up more passengers, and then head for British waters. Migrants typically pay about €2,000 for a place with no guarantee of embarkation, making the route both expensive and perilous: the distance from the Belgian coast to Dover is roughly 100 kilometres, more than double the crossing from Calais. Belgium’s right-leaning coalition, elected on a promise of the country’s “strictest migration policy”, has responded with concrete roadblocks to prevent trailer access to dunes, night-vision patrols supported by Frontex aircraft and joint operations with the UK Border Force. London has already transferred £1.3 million (€1.5 million) to finance Belgian surveillance equipment, mirroring similar bilateral deals with France. Local leaders, however, warn that enforcement alone will not suffice. West Flanders governor Carl Decaluwé has called for tighter checks on trains and coaches arriving from France, arguing that migrant camps could sprout on the Flemish coast if flows continue. Migration Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt acknowledged the numbers are still “small but worrying”, adding that every successful departure undermines the government’s credibility. For employers and mobility managers the episode is a timely reminder that cross-border security measures can shift rapidly. Companies routing shipments or staff through Channel ports should prepare for pop-up controls on Belgian roads and potential British calls for additional carrier-liability checks.

Travellers and organisations scrambling to keep pace with evolving border formalities can find practical support through VisaHQ’s Belgium portal (https://www.visahq.com/belgium/), which offers streamlined visa applications, real-time entry-rule updates and courier services—helping ensure that personnel and documents remain compliant as regulations tighten.

The changing geography of irregular migration may also nudge EU leaders – meeting in Brussels the same day – to intensify discussions on return and readmission, topics at the heart of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum that entered into force on 12 June.
