Cyprus to Pilot New Biometric Passports & e-IDs by August 2026
The Cypriot government has confirmed that the first field tests for an entirely new generation of national identification documents will begin before the end of June, kicking off a modernisation drive that affects every passport, ID card and residence permit issued by the Republic. German–Greek identity-solutions specialist Veridos Matsoukis was awarded the multi-year contract last year and will now supply all e-passports, e-ID cards and electronic residence cards from its high-security facility in Athens. The pilot phase will run through the summer, with international roll-out targeted for August 2026. The upgrade is more than a cosmetic change. Cypriot travel documents will incorporate the latest ICAO-compliant security features—laser-engraved polycarbonate data pages, embedded biometric chips and advanced anti-forgery holograms. At the same time, border-control hardware at Larnaca and Paphos airports is being refurbished to handle the new electronic documents and to interface with EU information systems such as Eurodac and the Visa Information System ahead of eventual Schengen accession.

Travellers who need clarity on how these new IDs will interact with existing visa requirements can tap into VisaHQ’s online resources. The company’s dedicated Cyprus page (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) offers up-to-date guidance on entry rules, document validity and Schengen developments, making it easier for individuals and HR teams alike to plan smooth, compliant travel.

For businesses, the new documents promise faster immigration processing for expatriate staff and their dependants. HR teams will be able to verify identity remotely through a mobile-ID component, reducing the need to present originals during onboarding and banking procedures. The Civil Registry and Migration Department has also signalled that the re-designed residence permits will support digital signatures, paving the way for fully paper-less work-permit renewals. International assignees already in Cyprus should, however, note that the existing pink-and-yellow residence cards will remain valid until their printed expiry dates. Companies therefore face a transition period during which both old and new formats will circulate. Global mobility managers are advised to brief travelling employees to carry supporting letters explaining the dual-document regime—especially when transiting Schengen airports where officers may be unfamiliar with the new Cypriot layout. In the medium term, the overhaul is expected to strengthen Cyprus’s bid to join the Schengen area by demonstrating that its identity-management ecosystem meets EU security benchmarks. Officials privately hope that the successful deployment will be reflected in the European Commission’s next Schengen progress report, due later this year.
