Guide warns Spain-based expats how EU Entry/Exit System is changing border checks
Barcelona law firm Klev & Vera published an in-depth guidance note on 18 June explaining how the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is affecting third-country nationals who live in or travel through Spain. Since the system went live on 10 April, all non-EU passport holders entering or leaving Schengen have their travel documents, facial image and four fingerprints scanned into a central database. While holders of a valid Spanish residence permit (TIE) are in principle exempt, the firm points out several grey areas—such as those awaiting renewal or with applications in progress—where travellers could still be flagged. Overstayers will be automatically identified, increasing the risk of fines or re-entry bans.

For individual travellers and corporate mobility teams who need hands-on assistance navigating these new Spanish border controls, VisaHQ offers streamlined visa and residence services, appointment scheduling, and real-time regulatory updates. Its dedicated Spain page (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) distils the latest EES and forthcoming ETIAS rules into clear checklists, helping organisations keep their staff compliant and journeys on track.

The note urges multinational employers to brief staff, ensure residence cards are current, and allow extra time at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat, where queues of up to six hours were reported during the first weeks of operation. The EES also has tax-residency implications. Because border authorities now hold precise records of days spent in Spain, discrepancies with self-declared residence for fiscal purposes will be easier for the Agencia Tributaria to detect. Companies that assign staff on commuter arrangements should audit their 90/180-day compliance trackers. Longer term, the EES is a pre-condition for the introduction of ETIAS travel authorisations, now scheduled for mid-2027. Corporate mobility teams should therefore expect further digitisation of EU border formalities and begin integrating biometric compliance checks into travel-management workflows.
