Qantas to close Emerald regional lounge from 21 June for three-week renovation, affecting FIFO traffic
Frequent-flyer regulars on the busy Brisbane–Emerald mining corridor will need to adjust their pre-flight routines: Qantas has confirmed its regional lounge at Emerald Airport will shut between 21 June and 10 July 2026 for a fast-track refurbishment. The closure forms part of the airline’s A$100 million lounge-upgrade programme covering eight regional locations. Emerald—gateway to the Bowen Basin coalfields—handles a high concentration of fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) personnel as well as agribusiness travellers.

During the three-week outage Qantas will provide voucher-based refreshments in the main terminal but no dedicated work zones or shower facilities.

For travellers who will be heading onward to international projects straight from Emerald, keeping on top of visa requirements is just as important as finding a seat at the gate. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) can rapidly check and secure work or business visas for dozens of destinations, giving FIFO coordinators and corporate travel managers one less headache while the local lounge is out of action.

Mining contractors have begun advising rostered staff to allow additional time for security queues and to charge devices before arriving at the airport. The upgrade introduces expanded seating, extra power outlets and improved ventilation aimed at coping with peak Monday-morning FIFO waves. Qantas says the lounge will reopen by 11 July with an 18 per cent capacity boost and new hot-food options aligned with longer flight schedules introduced under its Dash 8 fleet renewal.

Travel-management companies recommend corporates review lounge-access assumptions baked into airfare contracts, particularly for executives who rely on the space for confidential calls. Companies with strict fatigue-management policies are urged to consider day-before travel to offset the lack of rest areas during the renovation window. The Emerald project coincides with broader lounge-access rule changes from 1 July 2026 that restrict complimentary entry for Gold and Platinum members flying on Jetstar international services, underscoring Qantas’ push to monetise premium ground products.
