Adelaide Airport welcomed China Eastern Airlines flight MU 7991 from Shanghai Pudong on the evening of 23 June, marking the carrier’s first scheduled Mainland China service to South Australia since early 2022. The twice-weekly A350-900 rotation will operate through 2 August as a northern-summer trial, with frequency increases contingent on load-factor performance and freight demand. The service re-establishes a direct connection between two export-heavy economies at a time when bilateral trade in premium food and wine is recovering. State tourism authorities estimate the route could inject up to A$30 million in visitor spending if upgraded to year-round operation. Importers have also flagged freight advantages: the A350’s belly-hold can carry 20 tonnes of time-sensitive seafood and biotech exports per flight. For mobility programmes the revival opens a second China gateway beyond Sydney and Melbourne, cutting total journey times for assignees relocating to Adelaide’s defence, space-tech and resources projects. Employers should revisit relocation budgets that previously assumed a domestic repositioning leg. Adelaide Airport is offering inaugural-season fee rebates, while China Eastern is pushing corporate-contract discounts of up to 18 percent for block bookings made before 31 July. Travel managers may wish to lock in those rates ahead of a possible capacity squeeze during China’s Golden Week in October.
