Project Sunrise warm-ups: Qantas reveals domestic and short-haul proving routes for its A350-1000ULR
Qantas has begun outlining how it will bed-in its first Airbus A350-1000ULR ahead of the much-publicised non-stop Sydney-London flights targeted for October 2027. In a briefing on 23 June the airline said pilot training will begin with closed-door Sydney–Melbourne sectors before moving to passenger services on Sydney–Auckland and, crucially, Sydney–Los Angeles.

For passengers and corporate mobility teams eyeing these ultra-long-haul journeys, VisaHQ can simplify the visa and travel-document process well before seats even go on sale. The platform’s Australia portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) gives real-time guidance on entry rules for the UK, United States and more than 200 other destinations, ensuring travellers secure the correct authorisations in time to make the most of Qantas’ expanding network.

The staged rollout mirrors the introduction of the Dreamliner fleet in 2018 and is designed to familiarise cockpit, cabin and engineering crews with the aircraft’s systems, rest facilities and new-generation passenger cabins. Qantas is also weighing a ‘Points Plane’ launch – releasing every seat as a Classic Reward – a tactic that has previously generated headline PR and valuable load-factor data. For corporate travel buyers the announcement provides the first clues on inventory and cabin products that will replace A380 capacity on key North America and Europe corridors. The A350 introduces six First Suites and a dedicated ‘Wellbeing Zone’ as well as an ‘Economy Plus’ sub-cabin – a new upsell lever for travel-policy tiers. The carrier will need at least three A350ULRs to sustain daily London rotations, suggesting a ramp-up through late 2027. Mobility planners should map likely substitution windows: early 2027 on trans-Tasman and LAX services, followed by the marquee ‘Kangaroo Direct’ flights in the fourth quarter. Forward-booking contracts may need dual-aircraft clauses to accommodate the transition period.
