Nokia joins Finnish Border Guard consortium to build nationwide counter-drone network
Finland is moving to harden its external frontier against the growing threat of hostile drones. On 25 June 2026, Nokia announced that it has joined an industrial consortium led by the Finnish Border Guard to design and roll out a nationwide counter-unmanned-aircraft-system (C-UAS) architecture covering Finland’s 1,300-kilometre land and maritime borders. The programme will fit patrol boats, vehicles and fixed installations with intelligent sensors linked by Nokia’s secure 4G/5G private-wireless and microwave backhaul, creating a real-time digital picture of low-altitude airspace. Border authorities say the objective is to detect, classify and, where lawful, disable drones that may be used for smuggling, espionage or the “instrumentalised migration” tactics Finland has faced on its eastern frontier. Prototype platforms will be procured this year, with operational trials scheduled for 2027– early 2028; full deployment is expected before the end of the decade. The system will be interoperable with EU and NATO situational-awareness networks, reflecting Finland’s new role on the Alliance’s northern flank. For Nokia, the contract strengthens its fast-growing Defence business and showcases how mission-critical 5G can secure borders and critical infrastructure. The company will integrate encrypted edge-cloud processing so that sensor data can be fused locally even in GPS-jamming or network-denial conditions. Artificial-intelligence algorithms supplied by domestic start-ups will handle target recognition while allowing human operators to make final engagement decisions. Practically, the project should speed up border checks.

For travellers, business executives and technical specialists who may need to cross the Finnish border once the new controls are in place, staying on top of visa and entry requirements will be more important than ever. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) streamlines the process by providing up-to-date information, digital application tools and concierge support for every type of Finnish visa, helping visitors avoid delays that could arise from heightened border-security procedures.

Officers equipped with augmented-reality visors will see drone incursions and patrol assignments overlaid on live maps, reducing the need for radio chatter and freeing staff for immigration processing. Commercial freight forwarders are also likely to benefit: faster verification that no drone incidents are under way could shorten the precautionary shutdowns that periodically halt traffic at key crossings such as Vaalimaa. Multinational companies with operations in Finland should prepare for stricter air-space rules near the frontier. Companies using drones for surveying or logistics will need to register equipment and pre-file flight plans; failure to comply could lead to confiscation under the amended Border Guard Act expected later this year. On the upside, the enhanced security posture may reassure insurers and lower premiums for high-value cargo transiting Finland’s ports and road corridors.
