ADAC warns of ‘mega-traffic’ as second German holiday wave begins; Saturday truck ban now active
With schools breaking up in Bremen, Niedersachsen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany is bracing for a second surge of holiday traffic over the weekend of 3–5 July. Motoring association ADAC’s stauprognose, published on 1 July, predicts severe congestion on all major north-south and east-west corridors, especially the A1, A3, A5, A8 and A9. To keep passenger traffic moving, Germany’s seasonal driving ban for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes has come into force one day earlier than usual. From 1 July until 31 August, lorries are barred from autobahns every Saturday between 07:00 and 20:00 in addition to the year-round Sunday ban. Logistics managers must therefore reschedule domestic and cross-border shipments or face fines and forced lay-ups on motorway rest areas. For business travellers and relocating employees who planned to drive south via the Brenner or Tauern corridors—or north to the Danish ferries—the ADAC recommends travelling mid-week, very early in the morning or late at night. Ongoing construction work at more than 1,000 German autobahn sites, plus emergency resurfacing after June’s heat-related ‘blow-ups’, will further slow traffic. International assignees unfamiliar with German road rules should note that temporary exit bans (“Abfahrtssperren”) apply on feeder roads near the Austrian border during peak jams; sat-nav detours are strictly policed.

If you discover at the last minute that you need to renew a passport, secure a visa or verify entry requirements before facing those border checks, VisaHQ can step in quickly. Their dedicated Germany page (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) offers real-time guidance, application support and secure courier services, saving you a trip to the consulate when the roads are at a standstill.

Where feasible, companies might encourage rail travel on Germany’s €49 ‘Deutschlandticket’ or suggest domestic feeder flights to bypass ground congestion—though current airport delays make that calculus complex. Finally, Germany has maintained enhanced border checks at all frontiers since May 2025. ADAC expects queues at Suben (A3) towards Austria and Frankfurt (Oder) (A12) towards Poland. Travellers should carry passports or EU ID cards and allow extra buffer time when connecting to onward flights or ferries.
