Airlines ask Brussels to let airports suspend new EES biometric checks; Helsinki travellers warned of five-hour queues
Europe’s aviation bodies—including Airlines for Europe (A4E), Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA)—sent an urgent letter to the European Commission on 2 July 2026 asking for authority to “completely suspend” the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) whenever passenger volumes overwhelm border-control capacity during July and August. The call follows reports of queues stretching up to seven hours at Lisbon, Milan and Amsterdam, while wait times of three to five hours have been logged at Helsinki-Vantaa during peak afternoon banks when long-haul flights from Asia converge with European holiday traffic. EES—fully operational since April—records fingerprints and facial images of non-EU travellers each time they enter or exit the Schengen Area. Although designed to speed up controls, the initial capture of biometrics has proved far slower than projected. Finavia, which manages Finland’s airports, said it is already deploying extra staff and opening overflow lanes but confirmed that the bottlenecks are “most acute” for first-time visitors from the US and UK.

For travellers who want extra assurance before departure, VisaHQ can help. Its dedicated Finland page (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) provides real-time entry guidance, document pre-checks and visa facilitation services, helping passengers and mobility teams minimise unexpected delays linked to the EES rollout.

Finnair has updated its pre-flight messages, urging passengers to arrive at Helsinki Airport at least three hours early and warning that missed connections caused by border delays may not be eligible for EU compensation. For companies moving assignees or holding meetings in Finland this summer, the disruption could translate into extra hotel nights, re-ticketing costs and productivity losses. Global-mobility managers should advise travellers to complete advance passport checks where offered, ensure transit times exceed 120 minutes, and consider routing through non-Schengen hubs such as London Heathrow where intra-EU biometrics are not yet in force. At policy level, the Commission has scheduled a crisis meeting with member-state interior ministries next week. A short-term derogation that lets national border forces temporarily waive fingerprint capture exists, but carriers want a blanket waiver during the high season. If granted, it would mark the first large-scale suspension of an EU digital-borders programme and could influence the timeline for ETIAS, the next travel authorisation system due in 2027.
