Alagoas renews jet-fuel tax break, securing record international flight schedule
The state of Alagoas signed a three-year extension of its reduced ICMS (state VAT) rate on aviation fuel on 3 July 2026, a measure that officials say will trigger a 40 % jump in international seat capacity for the 2026/27 high season. Under the deal, Gol and Azul commit to expanding schedules to Maceió, while four airlines will operate direct charters from Argentina for the first time, totalling 139 flights. Alagoas has used the tax incentive since 2021 to court carriers, but this is the first renewal that explicitly ties the lower rate to verifiable increases in frequencies and load factors, with penalties for under-performance. Tourism authorities presented data showing that every percentage-point cut in ICMS generated R $18 million in additional tourist spending.

Travel managers organising these new itineraries should also verify entry requirements early. VisaHQ’s Brazil portal streamlines visa checks and applications for both Brazilian nationals heading abroad and foreigners planning meetings in Maceió, allowing companies to bundle travel documentation with flight and hotel blocks in one workflow.

For corporate-meeting planners and mobility teams, the larger takeaway is capacity diversification. With Gol launching new Recife-Maceió shuttles and Azul adding 41 dedicated July flights, companies can consider secondary cities for regional off-sites without routing staff through congested São Paulo hubs. The charter influx from Buenos Aires and Córdoba also raises the prospect of seasonal fare volatility; forward-buying blocks may secure better rates. The ICMS extension runs until 30 April 2027, aligning with airlines’ fleet-planning cycles and giving businesses a medium-term horizon for travel budgeting. Other Northeast states are expected to mirror Alagoas’ model, potentially shifting corporate-travel flows away from Rio and São Paulo during peak holiday months.
