Weekend tram and metro closures cause major mobility disruption in Prague
Visitors and residents in the Czech capital face significant detours this weekend after Prague Public Transit Company suspended a key east-west tram artery and a central section of Metro C for urgent track work. From Saturday 4 July through Monday 6 July, trams will not run between Otakarova and Koh-i-Noor on Vršovická Street; daytime service is replaced by bus X7 and night service by X95. Simultaneously, Metro C is closed between Pražského povstání and Nádraží Holešovice until Friday 10 July, with shuttle bus XC operating every three minutes at peak. The closures coincide with the Cyril-and-Methodius and Jan Hus public-holiday long weekend, when retail trading remains unrestricted and tourist footfall usually spikes.

While many visitors will merely have to adjust their journey times, those still in the planning phase should also ensure their travel documents are in order. VisaHQ’s Czech Republic portal streamlines the visa application process with step-by-step guidance and live customer support, making last-minute schedule changes—such as those caused by these transit works—less stressful for tourists and business travellers alike.

City officials say delaying the works would have pushed them into August, overlapping with the Prague Pride festival and the start of the school year. For business travellers the disruption affects the traditional hotel belt around Vyšehrad and the Prague Congress Centre, forcing delegates to allow at least 20 extra minutes when travelling to meetings. Ride-hailing operator Bolt reports a 25 % surge in demand along the detour corridor, while micro-mobility firm Lime has deployed 300 additional e-bikes near the affected metro stations. Employers with staff commuting from the southern suburbs have been advised to implement flexible working hours and remote-work options next week. Prague Airport, which is unaffected directly, nevertheless warns that passengers using public transport from the city centre should budget extra time to reach the Airport Express bus at Hlavní nádraží because of possible knock-on delays. The transit authority stresses that the works will deliver quieter track, upgraded signalling and barrier-free platforms, and confirms that the long-closed tram loop around Prague Castle will reopen one week earlier than planned on 10 July – welcome news ahead of the peak tourist fortnight.
