Five-hour queues at EU biometric borders prompt industry plea—Chinese travellers advised to build in extra time
Europe’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) has hit its first peak-season crisis, generating queues of up to five hours for non-EU nationals—including thousands of Chinese holiday-makers and executives—according to an open letter sent on 1 July by Airports Council International Europe, Airlines for Europe and IATA. TechsCurrent reports that the groups are urging Brussels to allow member states to suspend the biometric checks whenever volumes exceed capacity during July and August. EES, fully operational since 10 April, replaces passport stamping with a digital record that captures fingerprints and facial images on first entry.

Well before they reach immigration desks, travellers can mitigate some of the bureaucratic friction: VisaHQ, through its China platform (https://www.visahq.com/china/), guides applicants through Schengen visa requirements, offers document couriering and appointment scheduling, and provides status alerts—help that is proving invaluable as airport procedures become more unpredictable.

While EU officials say the system has already identified over 1,000 security-risk travellers, the industry argues the enrolment process is far too slow for summer peaks. Ryanair lists Tenerife South, Malaga, Alicante and Milan Bergamo among airports already experiencing “unacceptable” waits. For Chinese citizens the practical impact is immediate. First-time Schengen visitors—particularly tour groups—must now complete a full biometric enrolment on arrival even if they hold multi-entry visas. Corporate road-warriors returning after April should find repeat crossings faster, but employers are being advised to pad itineraries, avoid tight connections inside the EU and monitor individual airports’ contingency plans. Beijing-based TMCs say missed onward flights have already triggered re-routing costs for several Chinese pharmaceutical groups heading to conferences in Spain and Germany. If the Commission does not authorise broader suspension powers at an emergency meeting on 7 July, mobility managers may need to shift travellers onto Gulf or UK gateways that remain outside the Schengen EES regime.
