Opening date set for Gordie Howe International Bridge after U.S.–Canada toll-sharing deal
Just five weeks after a high-profile delay, Ottawa and Washington have agreed on the final revenue-sharing formula that will allow the long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge to open to traffic on July 27, 2026. The late-night agreement, announced in parallel statements from Infrastructure Canada and the White House on July 11, resolves a dispute over how the two governments will split net toll income from the CA $6.4-billion span linking Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan. Under the compromise, Canada will continue to own the structure and cover all outstanding construction costs, while the United States will receive a rising share of net toll profits—starting at 10 per cent and capped at 25 per cent—once lifecycle and financing costs are recovered.

For Canadian exporters, the timing could not be better. The Ambassador Bridge, built in 1929, already carries nearly CA $400 million in goods every day, and congestion regularly adds 45-60 minutes to truck trips. Because the new span connects directly to Ontario’s Highway 401 and Interstate 75, logistics firms say they will be able to shave an hour off just-in-time deliveries to Midwest auto plants and e-commerce warehouses. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority projects that commercial traffic will grow from an initial 8,000 trucks a day to 12,000 by 2030, generating an extra CA $17 billion in bilateral trade annually.

The bridge will also reshape cross-border mobility for passengers. Windsor residents rely heavily on Detroit Metropolitan Airport for international flights, while Detroiters cross the river for lower-cost Canadian health care and entertainment. Pre-clearance facilities are being installed on both sides so that NEXUS card-holders and low-risk business travellers can remain in their vehicles, cutting inspection times to as little as 45 seconds. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed that it will deploy 200 additional officers and roll out a pilot of its new Licence-Plate-Reader e-gate technology at the port.

Whether you’re a truck driver moving auto parts or a fan heading to a World Cup match, having the right travel documents in hand will be crucial once the new span opens. VisaHQ’s streamlined platform can help companies and individuals secure Canadian eTAs, U.S. visas, NEXUS renewals and temporary work permits, allowing mobility teams to track compliance in real time and avoid last-minute border snags.

Labour mobility specialists say the new capacity comes just in time for the FIFA World Cup matches that Windsor and Detroit will co-host in July 2026. Hotels on both sides of the river are already forecasting 95 per cent occupancy during tournament weeks, and the regional economic development agency expects 50,000 temporary work permits to be processed for event contractors, media crews and athletes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) told Global Mobility News it is considering a dedicated “World Cup Work Permit” similar to the one used for Expo 2025 in Osaka.

For corporate mobility managers, the immediate takeaway is clear: update ground-transport policies, renegotiate trucking contracts that currently include Ambassador Bridge delay buffers, and brief travelling employees on the new border technology. Companies with high cross-border traffic should also monitor the yet-to-be-published toll schedule, which analysts expect to be at least 15 per cent lower than the privately owned Ambassador Bridge in order to lure carriers in the opening months.
