European Sleeper adds Hamburg stop, giving Brussels first direct night-train link to northern Germany
European Sleeper quietly turned a timetable tweak into a strategic milestone today: from the night of 13 July 2026, its thrice-weekly Paris–Brussels–Berlin ‘Good Night Train’ now calls at Hamburg Harburg. The move creates the first direct sleeper service between Brussels and Germany’s northern metropolis since the demise of DB’s City Night Line a decade ago. For Belgian business clusters in life sciences, maritime logistics and renewable-energy consulting, the new stop cuts at least 90 minutes off rail journeys to the Port of Hamburg and opens same-day connections to Denmark and Scandinavia. Departures leave Brussels-Midi in the early evening and arrive in Hamburg before breakfast, allowing a full working day without the cost or CO₂ footprint of short-haul flights. European Sleeper’s founders say demand from corporate travellers is growing. Occupancy rates on the Brussels–Berlin leg averaged 78 % in Q2, and the company is refurbishing additional couchette cars to handle summer peaks. NMBS-International, which distributes the tickets, has integrated the Hamburg extension into its corporate self-booking tool, making policy-compliant rail booking easier for mobility managers. The service is expected to benefit from Belgium’s new night-train incentive scheme, which grants operators a 50 % reduction on network access charges for international sleepers departing before 23:00. That measure, adopted by parliament in May, enters force on 1 August, meaning the Hamburg call will qualify from the outset. Practically, travellers should note that the Hamburg stop is at Harburg rather than Hauptbahnhof; S-Bahn connections into the city centre run every six minutes. Passengers holding BahnCard 25 or 50 can combine discounts thanks to a fare-integration agreement between European Sleeper and DB Fernverkehr. Seats start at €39, couchettes at €69 and sleeper cabins at €129, with dynamic pricing already visible on the booking portal.
