Cable Damage Halts Four Strategic Tram Lines in Brussels Business Districts
A sudden failure of overhead power cables near Place Poelaert paralysed four of Brussels’ busiest tram routes on the afternoon of 13 July, forcing operator STIB/MIVB to suspend services on lines 8, 81, 92 and 93. The outage cut a vital North-South surface link that many commuters and visiting professionals use to reach EU institutions, the Louise financial quarter and key hotel zones. Replacement ‘T-buses’ were deployed, but STIB warned there was no estimate for full restoration, causing evening peak-hour chaos. Lines 8 and 93 connect major expatriate neighbourhoods like Ixelles and Uccle with the city centre, while line 81 links the vibrant Flagey tech corridor to Trinité, home to several international schools and embassies. Line 92, meanwhile, serves the Botanique cultural district and the EU quarter. With no clear timeline for repairs, multinationals scrambled to arrange taxis and ride-shares for client meetings and airport transfers. The incident underscores how a single infrastructure fault can ripple through Belgium’s capital, where many tram tracks share narrow corridors with car traffic. Business-travel consultants say companies should revisit contingency plans that rely heavily on surface trams, advising staff to download STIB’s alert app and keep prepaid metro tickets as a backup. Brussels Mobility has launched an investigation into the cause of the cable damage, examining whether high temperatures—temperatures reached 30 °C that afternoon—or construction vibrations from nearby renovation sites played a role. The authority is also assessing long-term resilience measures, including smart-sensor monitoring of overhead wires and faster switch-outs to electric buses when faults occur. Although most delegates attending the 14 July EU Council events were able to switch to metro lines 2 and 6, hoteliers reported a spike in late check-ins and airport shuttle bookings. The disruption is a reminder that even intra-city mobility hiccups can jeopardise tight international itineraries in Belgium’s political heart.
