Airport operator Aena announced on 14 July that its Spanish network handled 31.6 million passengers in June – a 3.8 % year-on-year increase – with Madrid-Barajas topping six million travellers. Aircraft movements grew 5.9 %, underlining the recovery of corporate and leisure demand. For mobility managers, the numbers point to tighter seat availability on key domestic and European routes during July and August. Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga all posted high single-digit growth in movements, while Alicante and Valencia saw double-digit passenger increases, driven partly by digital-nomad inflows. Cargo volumes were largely stable, but Barcelona posted a 16 % surge, suggesting continued reshoring of e-commerce logistics through Spain. The data may influence air-freight contract rates for high-tech and pharma companies relocating goods. Operationally, Aena says it has hired 1,200 additional security and ground-handling staff and rolled out 90 new biometric gates at Madrid, Barcelona and Palma to cope with the summer wave. Companies should advise expatriates to enrol in facial-recognition queues to minimise wait times.
