International traffic accounted for more than 11 million travellers, with the United Kingdom providing 2.94 million, followed by Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. June alone saw 2.77 million passengers, and the airport processed over 100,000 travellers in a single day for the first time on 26 and 28 June, underscoring capacity pressures at the height of the summer season. Aena has accelerated expansion of biometric e-gates and opened four additional Schengen-non-Schengen swing gates to ease congestion. For global mobility teams, Málaga’s surge strengthens the province’s appeal as a tech-hub relocation site—nicknamed the “Spanish Silicon Coast”—where companies such as Vodafone and Google already base near-shored teams. Frequent UK flights also make Málaga a practical base for British digital-nomad visa holders looking for short-haul access to headquarters. However, rising passenger volumes increase competition for hotel inventory and corporate apartment leases. Travel managers should lock in negotiated rates early and consider rail connections to Seville, Granada or Madrid as fallback routings when Málaga’s slots sell out. Local tourism officials say a fourth runway and a new intermodal rail terminal are under feasibility study, but commissioning is unlikely before 2030, meaning peak-summer crowding will remain a planning factor for years.
