Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) revised its travel and security guidance for the United Arab Emirates on 15 July. The update clarifies that holders of UAE residency visas and Emirates ID cards who attempt to depart the country on a German emergency passport or other temporary travel document must first cancel their residence permit with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). The cancellation process cannot be completed at the airport and can take a minimum of 24 hours. Why it matters: Many expatriates obtain provisional German travel documents when their regular passport is lost or expired. The new language underscores that such documents are accepted for exit only if the individual is not listed as a UAE resident. Attempting to depart without cancelling the permit can lead to denied boarding, fines, or an exit-ban flag in the immigration system. Corporate mobility impact: HR teams managing German and other EU nationals should incorporate an extra buffer for residence-cancellation formalities when planning emergency repatriations or assignment conclusions. Employees should be advised to keep at least six months’ validity on main passports to avoid relying on provisional papers. Procedural tips: Residents must visit the relevant emirate’s GDRFA or Amer centre with their Emirates ID, a copy of the temporary passport and a no-objection letter from their employer or sponsor. Once the cancellation receipt is issued, travellers may proceed to the airport. Companies may consider enrolling staff in the UAE’s new digital residency dashboard, which provides real-time status and can speed up cancellations when biometrics are already on file. Bigger picture: The amended notice comes amid heightened regional security and a surge in last-minute travel adjustments. Other embassies could echo the clarification, so global mobility managers should audit exit procedures for all resident employees, not just Germans.
