The Home Office confirmed on 15 July that both 2026 ballots for the Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) have now closed and all visas for Hong Kong SAR passport-holders have been assigned. The second 48-hour ballot ran from 00:01 h on 14 July to 00:01 h on 16 July Hong Kong time, offering the remaining slots of the year. Applicants had to email HongKongYMS@homeoffice.gov.uk with their name, date of birth and passport number. Successful entrants will be notified by 30 July and have 90 days to lodge a full application and biometrics. Unsuccessful candidates can try again when the 2027 ballot dates are published early next year. The YMS allows Hong Kong residents aged 18-30 to live and work in the UK for up to two years, extendable by a third year or convertible to other work routes such as Skilled Worker. Employers with graduate training or seasonal hiring needs should plan for arrivals between October and December, taking account of the three-week visa processing time and summer VAC backlogs. Demand remains intense: industry estimates suggest the July draw was oversubscribed by at least eight-to-one. Mobility managers should therefore remind staff of alternative pathways—such as the High Potential Individual route or BN(O) visa—as part of talent deployment strategies. The closing of the 2026 quota also marks the last year in which Hong Kong and Taiwan numbers are capped at 1,000 each; a Home Office consultation is looking at increasing places in 2027 to address chronic labour shortages in hospitality and tech.
