WestJet flight attendants approve strike mandate, raising risk of August travel disruption
The union representing WestJet’s 4,400 flight attendants has voted 99 per cent in favour of strike action if collective-bargaining talks fail to yield a deal by early August, CityNews Vancouver reported on July 15. The mandate triggers a 21-day cooling-off period under the Canada Labour Code, meaning a walkout could begin as soon as August 2—peak summer-travel season. Cabin crew are demanding ground-duty pay and scheduling protections comparable to those recently secured by Air Canada flight attendants. WestJet says it remains committed to reaching an agreement but warns that the union’s wage proposals would undermine its cost-competitive model. For corporate travel managers, the threat comes at a sensitive time: demand linked to the World Cup warm-up events and major festivals has already pushed airfares 14 per cent above 2025 levels. A WestJet shutdown would remove roughly one-third of domestic seat capacity and a significant share of trans-border flights to secondary U.S. markets, forcing travellers onto costlier, indirect routings. Companies with time-sensitive projects in Western Canada or oil-patch rotations to Calgary should build contingency budgets and consider carriers such as Flair, Porter or Air Canada. Under federal legislation, Ottawa can intervene with binding arbitration if the strike threatens the economy, but Transport Minister Pascale St-Onge has so far urged the parties to bargain in good faith. If a strike proceeds, WestJet would be obligated to refund unused tickets, but compensation for accommodation or consequential losses would fall to travellers or their employers. Mobility teams should also remind foreign assignees that Canadian visitor-status clocks continue to run even if their exit flights are cancelled, potentially complicating immigration compliance. The labour tension underscores chronic staffing challenges in Canada’s aviation sector, where pilot, mechanic and ground-handler shortages have fuelled a cascade of industrial actions over the past 18 months.
