Finland spent the past two days hosting one of the largest Indian trade missions ever to visit the country. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal arrived in Helsinki on 16 July at the head of a 70-strong delegation representing India’s digital-economy giants, advanced-manufacturing firms, renewable-energy developers and packaged-food conglomerates. The programme – organised by Business Finland together with Team Finland and the Confederation of Indian Industry – included a bilateral business forum, matchmaking sessions in Espoo’s Otaniemi innovation district and site visits to Nokia’s 6G research campus and VTT’s clean-hydrogen pilot plant. According to the joint press statement issued on Friday morning, the two governments agreed to establish a “Finland–India Technology & Mobility Corridor”. The corridor will create a fast-track mechanism for short-term business visas (under 90 days) and a dedicated help-desk at both the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) and India’s Bureau of Immigration for work-permit enquiries from companies operating inside the corridor. The parties also announced that negotiations on a bilateral Social Security Agreement – a long-standing request from Finnish multinationals that second employees to India – will resume in September. Much of the visit centred on talent mobility. Minister Goyal told reporters that India is considering adding Finland to the list of countries eligible for its e-Business visa, which would allow Finnish executives to obtain a 1-year multiple-entry visa entirely online. For its part, Finland confirmed that it will open a Business Finland liaison office in Bengaluru in early 2027 and that the Consulate General in Mumbai will pilot a 5-day express Schengen visa for participants in officially endorsed B2B programmes. Finnish companies welcomed the momentum. “We recruit hundreds of software engineers in India every year; a social-security deal alone would save us over 15 percent on payroll,” said Outi Kangas, VP Global Mobility at KONE. Technology sector employers also underlined the importance of predictable processing times at Migri, which currently averages 21 days for specialist permits. Practically, global-mobility managers should watch for official circulars in August detailing the scope of the fast-track visa desk and the criteria for the express Schengen pilot. Until then, existing rules continue to apply – Indian nationals still need a standard Schengen C-visa for business visits to Finland, and work in Finland longer than 90 days requires a residence-permit application through Enter Finland.
