With peak summer traffic pushing Helsinki-Vantaa toward a record two million passengers this July, airport operator Finavia has turned its attention to the traveller experience that greets international arrivals. On 16 July the company quietly opened “Luigi’s Italian Pizza” in the landside Food Hall of Terminal 2, complementing the airside Luigi’s All-Day Italian outlet near Gate 40. The new venue is more than a culinary footnote: by adding a popular grab-and-go option before security, Finavia hopes to reduce pressure on airside concessions and keep transfer corridors clear during the busiest transfer waves. Crucially for global-mobility planners, the opening comes with a two-hour free-parking incentive in the P1 Premium and P2 garages between 10:00 and 14:00. The trial, which runs until the end of August, is designed to encourage local staff and meet-and-greet drivers to wait in the terminal rather than curb-side, easing congestion on the departure ramp – a perennial complaint of corporate shuttle providers. Visitors claim the voucher by scanning a QR code at the restaurant counter and entering the licence-plate number in Finavia’s Moovy app. Finavia says the Food Hall extension is part of a wider landside-mobility strategy that also includes additional e-passport gates in the arrivals hall (due in September) and a kerb-side digital-queue system for taxis. “Every minute we shave off the ground journey translates into a smoother transfer and a better on-time record for the afternoon departure bank,” explained Heini Lahti, the airport’s Head of Passenger Services. For companies moving staff through Helsinki, the message is clear: advise travellers that landside dining has improved and instruct drivers to use the parking promotion to avoid potential fines for over-staying at the pick-up zone. Mobility managers should also note that Finavia continues to recommend at least 75 minutes for non-Schengen connections until the new e-gates come online.
