UK Updates Hong Kong Travel Advice, Re-emphasises Dual-Nationality Risks
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has refreshed its travel advisory for Hong Kong, stamping it “still current at 17 July 2026” and highlighting new guidance on dual Chinese-British nationality, e-cigarette restrictions and controlled substances such as CBD. Although the substantive text on entry requirements remains unchanged since April, the reaffirmation is important for British corporates sending staff into the SAR over the busy summer relocation window. The update reiterates that Hong Kong does not recognise dual nationality and will not accept a British National (Overseas) passport for immigration clearance or consular protection. Travellers who also hold Chinese nationality may be treated solely as Chinese citizens—meaning Consulate assistance can be limited if they run into legal trouble. Employers are therefore advised to review the passport mix of project teams and ensure that any staff who have renounced Chinese citizenship carry documentary proof. On mobility compliance, the advisory reminds visitors that possession of CBD products—legal in parts of Europe—is a criminal offence punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment in Hong Kong. HR managers should update pre-departure checklists to remove CBD-infused wellness items that have become commonplace in expatriate care packages. The guidance also feeds into insurance underwriting: the FCDO’s “dual-nationality” and “drug possession” warnings can influence policy exclusions, potentially increasing premiums for assignees deemed higher-risk. Companies should confirm that international medical plans cover legal defence costs in Hong Kong courts, which operate under the common-law system but have recently toughened sentencing on narcotics. Practical tip: During onboarding, require employees to declare all nationalities they hold and to travel only on a passport recognised by Hong Kong immigration. Remind staff that bringing vape products or CBD oils into the SAR could lead to immediate arrest at the airport.
