UK closes 2026 Youth Mobility Scheme ballot; Hongkongers await results
The UK Home Office confirmed on 15 July that all ballots for the 2026 Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) have now closed, ending the 48-hour email window that ran from 00:01 on 14 July to 00:01 on 16 July Hong Kong time. Up to 1,000 remaining places for Hong Kong SAR passport holders were available in this second—and final—ballot of the year. The highly popular visa allows Hongkongers aged 18-30 to live and work in the UK for up to two years without employer sponsorship. Successful entrants will be notified by email by 30 July and then have 90 days to lodge a full application, pay the £340 fee and the £1,035 annual immigration health surcharge, and attend biometrics at the VFS centre in North Point. For corporates, the YMS offers a pipeline of Hong Kong talent able to take on short-term UK assignments with minimal red tape. HR teams should remind staff that the visa is non-extendable and comptability with UK payroll and social-security rules must be assessed. Those not selected may try again in the 2027 ballot, dates for which will be published later this year. The Home Office update also reiterates that Japanese and South Korean nationals no longer require a ballot and may apply year-round, signalling a gradual move away from quota-based mechanisms. Observers predict that Hong Kong might eventually secure direct-application status if student and graduate flows remain stable under the BN(O) and High Potential Individual routes. Practical next step: employers with UK offices should prepare induction packs that cover National Insurance registration and zero-day right-to-work checks for incoming YMS holders, who will receive e-visas rather than passport vignettes.
