Shanghai’s Wusongkou International Cruise Port, the mainland’s busiest sea-gateway for leisure travellers, processed more than 26,000 inbound and outbound passengers on Monday, 21 July—its highest one-day volume since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Shanghai Customs, the mid-summer school holiday has fuelled an unprecedented spike in cruise demand, with most vessels running at or near full capacity. To keep queues manageable, Baoshan Customs deployed a “smart channel” model that combines advance passenger data, AI-assisted X-ray inspection and mobile health-declaration apps. The agency reported intercepting multiple batches of cut flowers and endangered-species souvenirs during the rush, underscoring the continued tension between facilitation and bio-security. The surge is commercially significant. Cruise lines repositioning ships to East Asia this summer—including MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean and China-flagged Adora—are using Shanghai as their turnaround base. Tour operators say the bigger volumes have shortened per-head port costs and reopened charter opportunities for corporate meetings-at-sea, a format that had vanished during the pandemic years. For mobility managers, the record day is an early indicator that China’s outbound leisure and meetings market is recovering faster than scheduled aviation seat capacity. Companies moving assignees or incentive groups via Shanghai this summer should budget extra time for embarkation formalities and remind travellers of China’s strict bans on importing plant material and wildlife products.
