Shanghai Pudong International Airport Tops China in International Passenger Volume

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) cemented its role as mainland China’s primary global gateway in the first seven months of 2026. According to statistics released by the Shanghai Municipal Government on 22 July 2026, the airport had already processed more than 20 million inbound and outbound passenger crossings this calendar year, the highest figure among all Chinese border-checkpoints. What makes the numbers particularly significant for corporate mobility teams is the composition of the traffic. Foreign nationals accounted for 3.29 million of the arrivals—up 22 percent year-on-year—reflecting a broad recovery in business travel and tourism demand. South Korean passport holders led the rebound with 430,000 arrivals, followed by Russia, the United States, Thailand and Malaysia. These flows closely mirror the roster of countries covered by China’s unilateral 30-day visa-free trial, meaning many travellers are now entering without the lead-time and expense of a consular visa. Transit business also surged. The airport handled 2.28 million passengers under the 24-hour direct-transit regime that allows eligible travellers to make same-day connections without formal immigration clearance. Multinational firms are increasingly routing regional itineraries through Pudong to take advantage of shorter minimum-connection times and the ability to hold meetings air-side in the airport’s dedicated conference suites. Several marquee events have helped push the numbers higher. July alone saw delegates for the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and multiple trade exhibitions channelled through Pudong’s dedicated immigration service desk, which Shanghai border officials expanded to handle nearly 300 VIP arrivals in the week of 14–20 July. Officials say they are prepared to open more e-gates and staff “Mobile Officer” pods should traffic rise further during August’s peak tourism window. For mobility managers the message is clear: Pudong’s throughput capacity, combined with China’s wider visa-free experiments, is restoring Shanghai’s position as the most convenient first-stop for expatriate assignments and short-term projects on the mainland. Organisations with high volumes of intra-Asia travel may wish to review airline agreements and hotel allocations to leverage the airport’s expanding connectivity and abundant seat inventory.
