UK Foreign Office refreshes UAE guidance: keep departure plans ‘under review’
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has silently refreshed its United Arab Emirates travel page, time-stamped 22 July but still current as of 23 July. The new wording folds this week’s drone interceptions and US strikes into its ‘Regional tensions’ section, reminding British nationals that attacks could resume without notice and advising them to ‘stay away from security or military facilities’ in the Gulf. The substance mirrors Germany’s assessment but adds a practical checklist: monitor media, sign up for FCDO e-mail alerts and ensure passports are valid for emergency travel. The advice stops short of recommending commercial flight avoidance, which means UK corporate insurance policies are unlikely to trigger automatic rerouting cover—an important nuance for mobility managers. Companies with UK assignees should nevertheless distribute the update, as failure to note revised FCDO guidance can expose employers to litigation if a later incident occurs. HR teams should also remind travellers that Emirates ID card holders re-entering the country after 6 months of absence risk automatic residency cancellation, a rule increasingly enforced since July. The FCDO says it is ‘closely monitoring’ whether further changes will be required; a move to the higher ‘advise against all but essential travel’ tier would have significant insurance and visa ramifications.
