Passenger volumes are already elevated as holidaymakers head for Ligurian and Tuscan beaches; any additional inspections could lengthen wait times at Chiasso-Brogeda and Domodossola-Iselle, two of the main commercial crossings. Swiss logistics firms moving time-sensitive pharma or watch components should prepare contingency buffers. The Federal Customs Administration told trade body Spedlogswiss that it will activate a “Green Lanes” protocol for perishable and high-value consignments if delays exceed 60 minutes. Rail operator TILO has pre-positioned locomotives in Como to keep commuter services running should controls cause platform congestion. Because the notification was filed under Article 25a of the Schengen Borders Code, Italy is obliged to lift the controls no later than 26 July unless it files a fresh risk assessment.
