Crucially, it reiterates that citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom may obtain the required residence permit after entering Germany, rather than applying for a visa in advance. For all other third-country nationals resident in Italy, the rule remains: a national D-visa must be secured before travel. The update provides an exhaustive checklist—from proof of ordinary residence in Italy to German A1 language certificates—and emphasises that only complete files will be accepted. The clarification helps multinational HR teams processing intra-EU moves: highly skilled staff from the eight privileged countries can relocate quickly with their German spouse and convert status locally, saving 8–12 weeks of consular processing. Employers should still book early appointments for dependants who do not benefit from the waiver. The embassy urges applicants to use the Auswärtiges Amt’s online portal and warns that telephone bookings are impossible. Given high demand, new slots open daily and may fill within minutes; travellers should monitor the system and secure backup dates. Relocation providers should adjust check-lists, ensure adequate health-insurance proof and brief transferees on the need for biometrics at the Ausländerbehörde once in Germany.
