Met Éireann issues twin small-craft warnings that could disrupt coastal transport
Met Éireann has activated two Yellow small-craft warnings covering virtually the entire Irish coastline for Tuesday, 28 July. South-westerly winds reaching force 6 are forecast from Loop Head to Malin Head between 01:00 and 20:00, while southerly force-6 gusts are expected from Carlingford Lough to Carnsore Point between 11:00 and 19:00. Although overall weather status remains Green, the warnings signal hazardous seas for smaller vessels including passenger tenders, crew-transfer boats serving offshore wind farms and some high-speed ferries. The advisory helps explain Irish Ferries’ decision to cancel several *Dublin Swift* catamaran sailings (see separate story) and may prompt further schedule changes on regional routes such as Cork–Roscoff and Rosslare–Fishguard. Operators of corporate yacht transfers and tourism charters around Dublin Bay have already sent cancellation notices to clients. Marine pilots at Dublin and Cork ports told Global Mobility News they will impose speed restrictions on inbound feeder services if gusts exceed 25 knots, potentially lengthening container turnaround times and affecting just-in-time supply chains. From a mobility-management standpoint, companies moving staff or time-sensitive equipment by sea today should build at least a three-hour buffer into itineraries and maintain close contact with shipping agents. Air uplift remains an option, but limited cargo belly space during peak summer schedules may force expensive freighter charters. Met Éireann will update the warnings as conditions evolve. Employers should subscribe to the agency’s SMS alert service and ensure that travel-risk dashboards capture marine-weather data alongside aviation and security feeds.
