A long-promised concession for the education sector finally arrives today, 1 August 2026. UK Visas and Immigration has activated the Germany-UK School Trip Travel Information Form, allowing state-registered German schools to bring groups of five or more pupils (aged 19 or under) to Britain without the need for individual visas or Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs). The scheme, first announced in February, mirrors longstanding EU arrangements that lapsed after Brexit and has been welcomed by tour operators who saw a 45 % drop in continental study visits after the end of free movement. Under the rules, each group must carry a validated travel-information form listing every traveller. Pupils who are EU/EEA citizens may use either a passport or a national ID card, while third-country pupils resident in Germany can travel on their German refugee or national passports. Crucially, no participant needs to obtain an ETA, removing a layer of cost and administration just as the UK moves to full digital border checks for most other visitors. Accompanying teachers still need to meet the UK’s normal entry requirements. Depending on nationality they must travel either visa-free, on an ETA, or with a Standard Visitor visa. The Home Office guidance stresses that adults must appear on the group form and present valid passports at the border. Head teachers must submit the paperwork to German municipal authorities at least 15 days before departure and carry two stamped copies for Border Force officers on arrival. The education and travel industries see the policy as a small but significant step towards rebuilding Britain’s appeal as a study-trip destination. The School Travel Forum estimates the sector was worth £1.2 billion to the UK economy before 2020. Operators are already advertising autumn itineraries built around the new process, and language schools in the South-East predict a 30 % rise in off-season bookings. Practical take-away: German schools planning trips this academic year should download the new form immediately and schedule file-submission windows into their term calendars. UK host venues should train front-of-house staff to recognise the document and be ready for mixed-passport groups who will now arrive without prior ETAs or visas.
